babykoala reacted to dorseyspeech4 in Fall 2020 Applications
hey @futurespeechie2 I would reconsider applying to UTSA and St. Augustine, those schools aren't accredited and I believe won't be for awhile. If you happen to get your degree from either of these schools, your degree will basically be pointless. Just an fyi!

Actually, from what I've read both on this site and on ASHA, if you get a degree from a school that is a candidate for accreditation, even if they end up not getting accredited your degree still counts. Programs have to jump through some hoops and have a good plan to even get to candidacy status, so it's not like they're bad programs, just new, and ASHA understands that. It might be different, though, if you go to an accredited school that later loses accreditation, but I don't think that happens too often. Schools definitely get put on probation but are typically able to turn things around before they lose accreditation.

I noticed the data fluctuated a lot as I was applying over the years! As if they change it based on how many applications they are receiving, or the competitive level of that graduating class. Don’t base your decisions too hard on those cut offs because I’ve had friends get in with killer applications just below the cut offs!
The application process is a huge business for colleges...and lucky for them they can just reject us in email form now...So check back in a few weeks you may find their credentials continue to fluctuate!

@speechieontherun the way you commented on posts is not supportive of other students. If you don’t mind me asking, have you received admission to a graduate program this fall? Because whether you have or have not, this is not an environment of disencouragement.

You weren't offered an interview, people who were interviewed are on the waitlist. Why would you think that you would be offered a waitlist spot or admission without an interview?

I can answer for them, and you know the answer deep inside as well - you've been denied admission.

Oh oops I thought you were asking about Akron in general, not the online program. I'm not that familiar with their online program, sorry!

babykoala got a reaction from Inbal in Do Applications REALLY take 3-4 weeks of processing???
Just wanted to let everyone know that I submitted my application two days ago and just received an e-mail saying it's been Verified. I've had my transcripts in for a few weeks, but I was not expecting CSDCAS to be this quick! Here's hoping they keep it up.

Hi, I want to reach out to other older students and see how your experience of the school-finding and application process has been. I'm 47 and leaving a career in marketing to pursue SLP. Just wondering if there are others out there in similar situations, and if so, how are you doing with all of this?

babykoala reacted to BADASSALICE in schools that look at your last 60
Hi guys,
This year I posted a thread about graduate programs that look at your last 60 gpa, and got a load of PMs about this list of schools. Personally for me this is important because I have a 3.95 in my last 60 and only 3.5 overall. I figured that this could potentially really help someone out on this forum so I'm posting this list for you guys. I found all these schools by looking at websites one by one, so enjoy! It's definitely not too late to apply yet. some of these schools are pretty prestigious big schools and I bet if you look into smaller schools you can find more. ps. some of these schools might look at your overall also, but focus on your last 60. but most of these schools do only look at the last 60. Merry Christmas!

Utah State has it too... I didn't find it terribly interesting or well-taught, but it wasn't super-difficult.

babykoala reacted to BioCook in Graduate Programs, is my GRE going to hurt me?
I'm sorry that your professor was not encouraging at all! Remember that the GRE score is one of many parts of your application. Numbers help, but they aren't everything. Someone could be REALLY good at taking standardized tests and then all of a sudden have a crappy bedside manner... that's not type of clinician we'd want!
If you were able to 100% show in your personal statement and experiences that you are committed to this field, it will really show. We're in this together!
Best of luck

babykoala got a reaction from kjgoo in Grad school is a CANDIDATE for accreditation- What does it mean?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that if you go through a program that's a candidate for accreditation, you'll be able to get your CCCs, even if they don't end up getting accredited (which is unlikely).

And also University of St. Augustine, Austin TX. Completely online but every trimester you go to Austin for a weekend. The program costs like $55K, and even estimating the price of the trips to Austin I figure it will still be cheaper than Nova(when I calculated ~$66K tuition and course fees) and Speech@NYU ($80K+ according to their website).

babykoala reacted to JennWilhelm in How do you decide?
There are pluses about each program but my gut is saying CSUN after I prayed . Thanks guys I'm going to wait and see if Emerson offers anything substantial, I have a bit of time I only have an unofficial offer from CSUN. Waiting to hear more.

babykoala reacted to smarieSLP2b in How do you decide?
Congrats! Personally, I wouldn't believe anyone regarding scholarship money if it was not in writing. I say go with the cheaper program, unless the school that mentioned funding can actually give it to you in writing. to guarantee you will actually be receiving something. Funding aside, I would also look at their delivery option and convenience. Which school finds your clinical placements for you and doesn't require you to do coldcalling etc.
-
babykoala reacted to Warelin in How do you decide?
This is generally not acceptable at most places and will cause you to burn bridges in a number of scenarios. I'd recommend against it. A deferral is meant to allow you to start at a later date provided everything stays the same.
I think the best policy here is to be honest with both schools. Tell them what would make things easier for you to accept their offer but be prepared to accept their offer if they offer what you're looking for.
