Why am I not getting chosen
WesttoEast18 replied to soontobeslp2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Well a third option would to take out a personal loan to cover your remaining tuition/housing (anything over the 10K per semester if necessary). It's a personal choice but something that you might want to look into. -

I'm hoping the waitlists work out for you! Are you planning on using financial aid to cover the entire cost of tuition and housing? I'm asking because for me, financial aid will not be enough and I will be taking out personal student loans to supplement my financial aid. I know debt is a huge issue for some people but I'd rather take out loans then have to turn down a program. -

I was waitlisted as well but removed my name as I've already committed to another program. -

May I ask why you wouldn't be able to attend a program you applied to? This process is definitely frustrating, but there's still hope with the waitlists! If you don't get accepted this cycle, you should look into programs that have spring admissions (their application process starts soon). Taco (lol) also recommended some great options. Also, have you looked into taking additional classes to raise your GPA in the major? You can either retake classes or take additional CSD classes that your undergrad may not have offered. For me personally, I had a lower undergrad (outside of the major) but did a post-bacc program and made sure to get excellent grades. I also found an in field volunteer opportunity which I think helped me a lot. I also applied to schools around me but a few rural ones as well, as a back up just in case I wasn't accepted to schools near me. I'm hoping one of the waitlists works out for you! Either way don't give up! Even if you have to wait another year it's still better pursuing it if this is what you want to do. -
I've heard really good things about this school! I was invited to interview but declined because 1. The distance- it was so far north and personally further than I wanted to be. I know NY is cold during winter, but I hear it's even colder than average up there (pretty much Canada that far north lol). 2. This may be personal preference but I wanted to earn a M.S. after graduate school versus a M.A. I've read that in our field, it really doesn't matter but for me it was just personal preference. If you don't care about either of those things then you should check it out! I have heard from multiple people that it's a good program and since it's a state school it will be cheaper.

Funding/Assistantship Offers?? Advice!
WesttoEast18 replied to Mel.SLP.2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think your best bet here would be to shoot them an email and phone call and inquire about if the position has been filled or not. If not, this will give you a chance to reiterate your interest in the position! -
I think this is a topic that every one applying to grad school thinks about. I can't speak for everyone else, but the way I view it is that money will come and go, but certain opportunities may only come once. I'm going to make the most of my time in grad school and take out whatever loans necessary to provide myself the experience that I'm looking for. I may be paying it back for years to come but I think it's worth it since I will only be going through a grad program once! But again, I see many people cite cost as something that dictates their program so you just have to decide what's more important to you!

Pre-SLP Program Questions
WesttoEast18 replied to AnnaB70's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I also did the post bacc program through UWEC and I highly recommend it! The professors are amazing and really make learning exciting. There is a lot of group work, but I think that they do that to prepare you for Grad school since there's such a high emphasis on collaboration. I also applied to grad school this year and the classes at UWEC met the pre-reqs for almost all the different classes the schools were requiring. Not to mention, two of my professors through UWEC (who I've never actually met in person) wrote me letters of recommendation, and while I don't know exactly what they wrote, I've been told that they were great letters. Overall, I really enjoyed my time there and feel like I learned a lot!- 2 replies

NYU Online Speech Pathology MS Program
WesttoEast18 replied to Mliriano's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
They have really helpful information sessions (held online) about once a month to help with questions like this. The one that I went to was hosted by two current grad students and they answered questions about the classes. I believe they have options for morning and evening classes (not sure how many times a week though) and the testing is also done online and timed. Hopefully a current grad student will see this and chime in! -
I agree waiting is the hardest part! Plus some schools take soooo long to get back to you. How many schools did you apply to if you don't mind me asking? Just try to stay positive! I applied to so many schools because I was concerned about not getting accepted anywhere because, as another poster mentioned, people are more likely to post their good news/scores/GPA's so it can get discouraging. Even if you are waitlisted you still have a good shot at getting in! I would just try to stay busy and know that it will be here before you know it!

I meant that you should receive an email from Midwestern a few days after submitting the application (separate from the CSDCAS confirmation). However, they might be behind schedule with contacting people.

The post-bacc program was online so I would say it's similar to the distance program so I'd highly recommend. I do know that with with the distance program I believe you have to spend a week on campus for two semesters but they provide you an option to stay on campus at an affordable price. I really enjoyed the classes and working with the professors online. Also, not sure how long the program is at Florida but the distance program through UWEC is three years I believe.

I did my post-bacc through UWEC and loved it! I applied to their in person residential program but was waitlisted (I removed myself since I've been accepted to a closer school). The professors are all very knowledgable and treat students with respect. They set up the classes so the expectations are very clear and thoroughly prepare you for quizzes and exams. All professors and staff have been very friendly, approachable, and nice! Wisconsin schools systems in general area really great and students get an amazing education. For UWEC, I hear they have a beautiful campus. Based on the prior response it sounds like both are good programs! I would think about cost, living situations, and what type of climate you'd like to live in for two years. WI and FL are opposites when it comes to climates lol.

Definitely don't give up! Reading these forums can be discouraging but you just have to have faith in yourself and let your passion for the field shine. I really do think many schools place emphasis on experience. Good luck!

Normally, I don't think it would count against you not to attend an open house. However, based on what you quoted it sounds like they do require (or strongly encourage) applicants to attend. Is it an open house AND interview? I would email the school and explain that you're out of state and inquire if the open house is mandatory to applicants. If they are conducting interviews there ask if it can be conducted through Skype. I applied to a few out of state schools and unfortunately had to pay to travel to one. If you haven't heard back from any schools yet I would personally attend, but of course it's personal preference.

Summer internship
WesttoEast18 replied to soontobeslp2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I would err on the side of caution your first couple weeks in the position. It's better to start out by overdressing and then seeing how everyone else interprets "business casual." If you see your colleagues wearing nice jeans, then I would say go for it. For your first few days I'd recommend nice dress pants and blouse. -
After going through this application round, I do think that there are many schools that consider applicants as a whole. While I have a good GPA in the major, I do not have a great undergrad GPA, nor do I have above average GRE scores. I have still been called for several interviews and received a few acceptances! I would just recommend doing your research on the schools and seeing the stats of the applicants they accept on the ASHA website. It seems like many schools do put an emphasis on experience whether that be a job or volunteering. Good luck!

You should receive a confirmation email a few days after submitting through CSDCAS. I do know that they've been interviewing and offering admissions on a rolling basis, so it's possible that they are behind schedule with sending the confirmations.

I interviewed on Feb 2 and heard back yesterday that I was accepted. While it seems like a great program, I will likely decline the offer. I've been accepted into my top choice in my state. Good luck to those who haven't heard yet!
