Second on hearing nothing from Boston College. I am an excellent fit for their program, but I have a bad overall GPA. But that's pretty much my only blemish, while I have great other stats.

Other programs I've applied to but have heard nothing from:
UC Irvine (Sociology and Global Studies)
UC Riverside
UC Santa Cruz
University of Chicago
Cal Berkeley (Geography)
Binghamton
Columbia Journalism School
USC Journalism School

I thought I would hear back from somebody by now, but I'm hoping that this silence means my application is being seriously considered.

Hi y'all after checking the results page for days nonstop, I gave in and signed up just now... Got my first rejection some days ago and wasn't sure what to make of it. To all those accepted, big congrats!! To those of us still waiting in the dark, I'm sure we will hear good news soon!

Also, has anyone heard back from Duke?

Someone on here emailed the dept last week I believe and we should be hearing back by the middle of the month. Nothing too definite from them yet, but soon enough. I think the middle of February is pretty typical of the program based on past years' results.

Hi there! Just got an admission from a program I really like! This is the first acceptance so I don't have any comparison, plus I don't know anyone to discuss this with. Their funding package says it's a "predoctoral fellowship" for 5 years, and will take the form of "a research assistant or an NIH trainee, based on ongoing research at the center each year." I'm a bit confused. Is it a fellowship, a RA, or a traineeship? Will the title of my funding affect how the tax is calculated?

Good luck to everyone who are still waiting for the decisions!

From the graduate director at LSU:

“As you likely already know our application deadline for fall 2021 was January 31. The five members of the Graduate Faculty are reviewing all completed applications this week and we will meet next week to make admissions decisions as well as our initial funding decisions. I can confirm that your application is complete and we are reviewing it now. I will likely contact all applicants by February 15 to communicate our initial decisions.”

Yes, it does I think! Either way it counts as income. Check out the Personal Finance for PhDs podcast. But also it makes a difference to your experience there. Do you want to TA every semester? If you want to be a prof and need teaching experience, maybe! If you really want to research all the time, a research assistantship or NIH traineeship would be better. Move this convo to the negotiating offers and stipends conversation. I'm very interested in where it goes.

Looks like three out of four rejections for me will come next week. Well, it has been a nice journey waiting for you guys UCLA, WashU, and CUNY. Gotta keep my fingers crossed for four remaining apps

Hey y'all! Congrats to those who have received acceptances. For those who are still waiting or waitlisted, like myself, I'm sending positive vibes and good thoughts!

I am wondering if anyone applied to UC Davis, Riverside, or San Diego? Is anyone familiar with admission procedures or have any news about when prospective students might hear back? Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing re: UC Riverside!

Re: UC Santa Cruz, I saw someone posted an interview on the results board on 19th Jan - not sure if this is real though?

In previous years they've sent out their results by now (end of Jan/very beginning of Feb), but this year does seem to be a massive deviation from usual timelines for a lot of schools...

Everytime I see people say they found out via portals I panic a bit, even if I didn't apply to that program. I've been doing better at not checking the portals constantly and just casually checking email, but now I just want to log-in....

As a way to distract: Are you doing anything fun/relaxing this weekend? I'm trying out this viral feta pasta recipe I saw that looks amazing and possibly breaking out my watercolor paints.

I try not to allow myself to be regretful of great programs I didn't apply for that were taking applications because I was only thinking about the programs I wanted to go to that closed down admissions for the year. Plus, I applied to plenty of great programs that I would be more than happy to be at.

I might take a page out of your book and take out my painting stuff, BUT I do have a recorded presentation for a research competition I need to work on. There is definitely plenty of time for both and it will be a great way to get away from my email for a while and not worry about admittances and rejections.

I am working on yet another custom keyboard - this is the THIRD one since I submitted my applications back in November - which is about to be completed this weekend

I've been telling myself the past few weeks I would paint and haven't yet. And good luck on your research competition!

Has anyone heard back from George Mason?

Expand

I received an email from George Mason's CHSS Graduate Admissions saying that they "do not have a timeline for the reviews," and we should continue to monitor our application portal for updates including decision.

This sounds fun! I wish I was as dedicated to my hobbies or carved out more time for them amongst my work life.

I was thinking about why these schools are being so responsive and kind about our inquiries about the admissions decision timeline. I bet they get tons of inquiries a day from anxious students, so they must be annoyed! But I recently heard back from a university about a timeline, and they were incredibly gracious and patient with me. I realized that they are nice because if we are to be accepted, they don't want us to have a sour opinion of them from the get-go. It reflects really well on a department for them to be patient, and that may say something about how they treat their grad students.

On a note that's not related to graduate school, I've been listening to Alicia Keys a lot lately. I grew up with her music, but never really paid attention. Then I watched a video of her playing live with John Mayer in Times Square and I was... blown... away.

Also, I've been using the Nintendo Switch Ringfit to exercise. It's pretty fun!

I've fallen back into listening to music I used to have on repeat all the time. Also really love using Beyonce's "Homecoming Live" on spotify as pump up music to energize me and pump up doing work. I live for performers that sound incredible live.

I actually had a moment of panic from UCI today when their financial aid office emailed me about my aid app, but "NOTE:  This notification is intended to inform you of your financial aid application status only and does not imply acceptance for admission." I am in solidarity with everyone waiting in Limbo for notices. It's definitely not my definition of fun.
