  1. Hey! I’m current first year student. Fall semester you will have class Monday-Wednesday with some labs and community screenings on Thursday and Friday. Spring semester there is only class Monday/Wednesday and practicum on Tuesday/Thursday
  2. Hi, Two of my classmates who did their post-bac through Pacific created our fb page. I'm sure you guys can make one though? You will eventually have one though. Also, you will be placed into a FB group with all of the current 1-year students (second years starting the fall), as well as a group with all the past cohort alumni, professors, and current students in the program.
  3. Hi guys! I just wanted to say CONGRATS on your acceptance at Pacific U. I am a current 1st-year grad student there and would be happy to answer any questions! It truly is a fantastic program and not like others. You guys are going to love it! Can't wait to meet all of you!
  4. I am sorry. That is heartbreaking. I am in graduate school at Pacific University is Forest Grove, OR (14 miles outside of Portland). The entire campus is focused on diversity and acceptances of everyone. I would definitely look into their program. We have the most compassionate and accepting professors ever!
  5. Unfortunately, housing and other living expenses (i.e., groceries, gas, etc.) are typically paid for with financial aid or private loans. I am a first year SLP graduate student. In my welcoming/acceptance letter, my school mentioned that if we do plan to work, then it is recommended to work a maximum of five hours per week. The workload is high and demanding, in our program, we are considered to be "on-call" for any community screenings, meetings, labs, etc. Although, we usually have an idea of when we may be needed, its never a guarantee and missing something for work is considered to be unexcused. I have a cohort of 35 students and believe may be less than 10 of us work (including babysitting, Lyft driving, etc.). When I first started, I seriously thought I would have time for work, but I can't even imagine fitting the time in now that I am halfway through the semester without giving up sleep, self-care, and the small social life that I do have now. I would honestly be burnt out if I had to work on top of going to school. I feel like I should also note, some of my classmates are in relationships, or they are married; their significant others tend to help out with living expenses. However, the majority of students take out loans.
  6. I’m a current SLP grad student at Pacific U. If you have any questions let me know. It’s seriously the best program ever!
  7. I took mine online through the University of Montana.
  8. Hi! Sorry for the late response! I was accepted at Portland State University and at Pacific U. Both are in PDX area. Never give up
  9. My GPA is 2.99 and my GRE scores are V=146, Q=143, AW=4.0. I was accepted to Portland State and Pacific U. Don't give up!
  10. I had a terrible time in my undergrad program. At the time, I didn't know it, but I had dyslexia and was not diagnosed until 2 years after I graduated from undergrad. I was told by not one, but THREE professors AND my adviser to "highly consider" a different career path and that I would "never be accepted into a grad program", because I was not a "strong enough candidate." It was the hardest thing I ever had to hear. I sulked for about 2 years. Finally, I thought screw it I am good enough and will make into grad school. Fast forward 5 years, I was accepted into not one, but TWO grad programs. My GPA and GRE scores are not what one would consider exceptional either (GPA: 2.99 GRE: V=146, Q=143, AW=4). I was almost driven more to push harder because I was told I was not good enough. You can PM if you want to know how I did finally get accepted. However, my point is you can't let one person tell you that you are not good enough. Screw them. If you are passionate about becoming an SLP then you can't let one person opinion of you get you down.
  11. YES! There is definitely hope. But, DO NOT give up. I graduated with a 2.54 GPA (So yes, lower than you). I had an undiagnosed learning disability until the age of 24 (graduated from undergrad at 22). I was told by 3 professors at my undergrad that I would never be accepted into a graduate program and to "highly consider" switching career paths. Ironically, this made me more determined to get in. I worked as an SLP-A for 5 years and retook some classes to bring my GPA up to a 2.9. I applied to 9 schools and was accepted to two schools and waitlisted at another. While it was a long process, in the end, it was all worth it! I would look at applying to schools that look at the application holistically, rather than those that base their decision on GPA and GRE scores alone.
  12. The University of Montana has an 8-week online Neuro Class. I took it last summer and it definitely doable. I want to say its $850 for the class? I wouldn't quote me on it. It does start soonish, I think the end of May.
  13. Congrats! That will be an extremely big, but exciting move for you! I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, and maybe there is some reason you are meant to move to the east coast!
  14. Ah, thank you! I did decide to go with Pacific, but I am still having a hard time letting PSU know my decision (I have until tomorrow to make my final decision). Dang! I wish I could give you one of my spots, haha, if only it worked that way. ? Where did you get accepted (btw, congrats) at from across the country?
  15. Thank you so much!! This really helped give me something to think about. I have worked an SLP-A in the educational setting and have very little insight the medical aspect. I have heard OSHU is big for research. During my interview at Pacific, I met one of their community partners from OSHU who was specialized in cleft lip and palate. So there must be some connection with OSHU if one of the community partners was there for the interviews?? I agree though, I don't think I can go wrong either way. However, I am leaning towards Pacific, I just loved the professor when I went for my interview! I was looking at PSU's webpage and have found very little information. Are you going to Pacific this fall? Thank you again for helping me!
  16. I am not sure about the others, but I am on the teacher's pay scale. I have heard of SLP-A's only getting paid at the para-educator level. It's going to depend on the state and school district budget.
  17. SLP-A if you can find a state that does have SLP-A's. I have worked in Montana as one for the past 5 years. Behavioral Specialist Child Development Preschool However, all of this is going to depend on where you live and the qualification in your state. If you are considering going to grad school, I would look for an SLP-A position.
  18. I apologize that this is kind of long... Background: I have a lower undergrad GPA (2.99), but I also have 5 years of work experience as an SLP-A. There is very strong and valid reason for my low GPA, which was all explained in the personal statement portion of my application. I was once told I would never be accepted into a Grad Program, so to even just have one acceptance was HUGE for me. I honestly would have never dreamed I would have the option to choose between two schools. I was accepted into Pacific U on March 2nd and found out yesterday that I was accepted into Portland State off of the waitlist. I never thought PSU was on option for me because of the high number of applicants ( I think last year there was like 650?) and my low GPA. Second, there was an issue with my transcript and my application wasn't verified by January 15th (It was verified on 1/16 at 8:00 am). I emailed PSU when I was applying to explain my transcript situation and was pretty much told my application wouldn't be considered because I didn't meet the verified deadline date. I assumed I was rejected at that point. So, when I found out I was on the waitlist, I was shocked. I also didn't think I would get in off the waitlist because I am on the second tier and was told that those on the 2nd and 3rd tier of the waitlist typically do not get in. When I interviewed with Pacific, I immediately fell in love with the program and the professors. I loved everything about it there. With that being said, I feel like I should at least look into PSU's program. But, I know very little about the program in general other than what I could find on their website. I am hoping I can find someone that completed their undergrad at PSU or someone that is a 1st-year grad student at PSU that can help give me some insight into the program. I am looking for complete and honest answers. The location and the price of the both PSU and Pacific really doesn't matter to me and neither is something I would consider "deciding factors". I am more interested in learning more about which program would be the best fit for me. If anyone has any insight into either program, I would love to talk to you! Thanks!
  19. Yes they do! I was awarded 61k (yikes) and it included a budget breakdown of tuition, books, living expensives, etc.
  20. Hi, Thank you for sharing which backpack you use! I will be moving to Portland for school and had not thought about the rain. I will have to look into timbuk2 backpacks!
  21. Hey! When I went for my interview, I was told all of the grad students live in Beaverton or Hillsboro and some even live in downtown Portland. When I go house hunting, I plan to look in the Beaverton or Hillsboro area. Congrats on your acceptance! Can't wait to meet you!
  22. I'm not sure how helpful this is to you but I know there are 6 people (including myself) that plan to attend so far. This is from our Facebook book... but that only includes those who have found the group. I also know one person that has removed themselves from the waitlist.
  23. Good Luck to everyone on the wait-list. I plan on attending and can't wait to meet everyone. If you are accepted let me know! Best of luck to everyone!!!
