I also got a rejection from Northwestern. I got an email to check the portal.

Haven't received anything from Northwestern. When did you get the email to check the portal? I wonder if they are going alphabetically.

I got the email at 10:00am MST on the dot. I would say that going alphabetically makes sense here but the fact that it was exactly at 10:00 makes me think otherwise.

Thanks! I hate Northwestern's approach - they are known to drag them out for weeks. I just want to know and move on.

I totally get where you’re coming from, but a part of me doesn’t want to know as well (just in this case), because seeing it makes it so real and then this cycle would pretty much be over for me?

It wouldn't be over. You're waitlisted at two place and I think you have a very good chance of being admitted at either Rice or Texas.

That’s true too. I guess northwestern just had a special place in my heart. I wanted it more than any other school in my list...

I would be incredibly happy to go to UT Austin though :)

Let 'em rejections come. And then prove Northwestern they lost out.

Hey, can an LSE applicant tell me what does (MPhil/PhD) attached to the names of some but not all programs? Does it simply mean that the department offers an MPhil for those who don't have one and a PhD/DPhil for those who already hold a postgrad degree, or, does it imply an enroute master's embedded within a PhD? Does it mean an automatic entry/acceptance into the PhD once the master's is completed or is it something not indicative of anything? Thanks in advance.

LSE has started to adopt a US approach to their PhDs. Therefore, you first begin by doing the MPhil. If you don’t perform well enough to advance to the PhD stage, then you finish the program with just the MPhil, similar to an en-route degree in the US. If you perform well enough, you automatically advance to the PhD stage after defending your prospectus etc.

Hi everyone,?

Has anyone heard back from the University of Ottawa, Victoria, UBC, McGill, and Concordia?

When do Canadian schools usually release the results?

Posted

How are people ranking schools on here? I see a lot of talk about Top 50, Top 10 etc....

Are you all ranking them based on Undergrad ranking? I’m very curious.

thanks

I think people are generally referring to the US News rankings here: https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/political-science-rankings

I don't expect Concordia until March or April since they have a later deadline (Feb 1). I applied early and was notified my materials were under review since December but not sure if it's rolling admissions or they send them all out at once.

Usually mid march.  Some schools are a bit sooner.

There are still some interviews from Vanderbilt that will be sent next week, since this year they are behind their schedule.

That's such a relief! I haven't seen anyone claim a CP interview yet so maybe there's hope. Where did you hear this from?

I think that depends on the funding situation and your career goals. Back in 2009 I turned down a funded PhD from UCONN to get my Master's at Georgetown, so a very similar situation. But at that time I was happy to pursue a foreign policy career, and the MPP from Georgetown opened all of the doors I needed. I managed to get what was at the time my dream job, but I also wound up with over $100,000 in student loan debt that I'm still paying off. So I think the biggest question is if you really want to go straight into academia and are therefore going to try and get the PhD as soon as you are done with your masters, and/or what your financial situation is going to be like during the masters. I don't regret mine, but if I had decided to immediately go for my PhD afterwards (instead of 10 years after my masters), I would have been super bitter about that student loan debt.

Word to the wise. If you seek to get a professional master's, please think more than about what doors the degree may open up for your first job. Think abut what it does to boost your career in the long run.

Georgetown's MPP for example has brand cache and connections to open numerous doors. However, the program is problematic in that it doesn't prepare people to have a professional mind set and striver's culture. So many of my classmates have struggled professionally in the first job and beyond their first job because the school did terrible job for professional preparation or have settled.

Many other MPP schools actual make a sincere effort at hoisting a professional culture and their graduates don't often struggle as much from such issues.

No matter if your choose a professional master's or PhD, culture matters. I recommend you make sure it serves you well!

Hi, this is an incredibly stupid question, but could anyone tell me how to check private messages people send you? Is there like an inbox or something I don’t know about?

I don't know if you can get to the inbox from mobile, but if you are on desktop its the mail icon in the top right.
