Taro_Taro Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 As a developmental/education/quant psych person, I feel excluded pizzarollgotbusted, freudleavemymumoutofit, SocDevMum and 7 others 2 8
EileanDonan Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Although I am clinically-focused, I will second this question. Surely the admins recognize that psych consists of many sub-disciplines, with the variety of graduate programs reflecting this? Would it be that difficult to either revert the forum back to general psych, or to at least create additional subforums? PokePsych, Psyche007, thaitea and 4 others 1 6
philoquant Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 As a non-clinical person, I found this board very useful. I'm afraid future non-clinical psych applicants won't know to post here. Psyche007, freudleavemymumoutofit, PokePsych and 3 others 4 2
amazingbutternutsquash Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 This exactly. Frankly, this is a stupid, exclusionary change. Clinicians obviously felt comfortable posting here before, and non-clinical psychologists deserve a place on gradcafe. I am really not seeing the benefits of this decision. I support changing the name back. PokePsych, Psyche007 and socialpsychnerd 1 2
alwaysapplying Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 change it back PokePsych, Taro_Taro, forensicpsychstu and 3 others 3 3
Psyche007 Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 11 minutes ago, alwaysapplying said: change it back I'm a clinical psychology doctoral student and I approve this message. PokePsych 1
Psyche007 Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 As an aside, if they intend to open new boards for different psych fields, that's a huge error in judgment. We need interdisciplinary contact, even if it's at the application stages. I think someone goofed. They leapt on an idea and didn't really think it through. forensicpsychstu, CheesecakeFactory04, justacigar and 8 others 2 9
justacigar Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 Just adding to the growing group to say change it back! While I recognize clinical psych is a large focus of the forum, there are LOTS of other sub-disciplines that use threads. If I was new to GC and wasn't clinical, I wouldn't know that this space was for me, too. forensicpsychstu, Taro_Taro, CoffeeErryday and 4 others 1 6
PsyDuck90 Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 FYI, I have emailed admin to inquire about the change. forensicpsychstu, CheesecakeFactory04, amazingbutternutsquash and 7 others 7 3
Psyche007 Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) I'm just bumping this for visibility AND to make the point that, at the moment, the top ten threads in this forum include Quantitative Psych, Clinical & Counseling Psych, Industrial Organizational Psych, Cognitive Psych/Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Psych, and Social & Personality Psych. Sorry, School Psych. You just missed the top ten. ? Edited February 14, 2021 by Psyche007 frazyfar, justacigar, forensicpsychstu and 2 others 5
PokePsych Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Other than these valid points - a lot of PhD programs don't even have specific areas in their program (only 'psychology') and a lot of people do interdisciplinary things (e.g., social neuroscience is a field?!) This distinction makes so not sense.... Psyche007 1

This distinction makes so not sense.... Yeah, it's interesting that nobody has addressed this, despite being notified by @PsyDuck90. They can just change it back, no big deal. People forget that providing a service doesn't bestow ownership over a community. Unilateral change is this context is short-sighted, which is why I prefer to think of it as a goof and not a deliberate and indifferent modification. forensicpsychstu and amazingbutternutsquash 1 1
lewin Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Longstanding tradition in the field. Ignoring the experimental psychologists is how we ended up with APS (Cautin, 2009). I agree with everybody else; the change is pointlessly exclusionary.
amazingbutternutsquash Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 It's been a few days. Have the admins said anything?

Well, then maybe it's time to follow up with them? Or for us to ask directly? Alternatively, I may just ditch this forum. Reddit may be better going forward. I know I have no reason to stick around a forum that's excluding my entire subfield... along with most of the psychological scienes.

Regression2theMean Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 Strange that they made this change at a seemingly random time after many years of this forum being named "Psychology." I'm hopeful they will change it back once they receive everyone's messages!
Taro_Taro Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 Hmmm. I wrote a message to the administer yesterday and they replied and said they would talk to the relevant person. Hope the change will be made soon!
justacigar Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 Hey all, I noticed today there is also a thread called "Forum Feedback". Wondering if we should take our voices over there as well? maybenextyear, EileanDonan and Coffee_and_Psychology96 1 2
maybenextyear Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 This is very strange there are other disciplines besides clinical, too...
justacigar Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 Okay, I started a thread if you want to add your voice there, too! SocDevMum 1
