A 3.5 isn’t that bad, standardized writing isn’t really comparable to day to day writing. I personally wouldn’t retake it if those were my scores. Use your personal statement as a place to show off your writing skills.

When I submitted my applications I had a 3.48 overall gpa, but it was a 3.72 in CSD major classes. On the GRE I got 145 V 144Q and 3AW. I applied to 5 schools rejected from 3 and waitlisted at 2 and then accepted off the waitlist at one of the schools. Remember that your GPA and GRE are just part of your application. Make sure you have a strong personal statement and letters of recommendation. You can do it!

Low GRE, what do I do?
soontobeslp2018 replied to slp2be811's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My GRE scores were 145 V 144 Q and 3 AW. I was accepted to my top choice which is the second best school in my state. Raising a verbal score is more difficult than math because there’s not a whole lot you can do in terms of studying because it’s not really realistic to learn and memorize all these new words that may or may not be on the test. I think retaking the GRE is a good option for you if you have the time and the money. Just make sure you send the test scores from both tests to all the schools that you apply to so that way they can see the highest scores between the two tests. also remember that GRE scores are not everything. When you see the averages for certain schools make sure to remember that there were people who scored below that and still got in. Spend time focusing the aspects of your application that you have more control over like your personal statement. Good luck! -
Has anyone applied to just one school?
soontobeslp2018 replied to speechietobe1's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
What did you get on the GRE? GRE scores are not everything. I was accepted into my top choice, which is the second best school in my state, with scores in the low 140s. Take the GRE, then just focus on the aspects you can really control like your personal statement. Don’t let one test stop you from applying. Have you done any volunteering, lab work or have any leadership postitons that you can highlight? I know how discouraging the GRE can be, but there are plenty of people who don’t have the best scores who still get in. There are plenty of other things to highlight than one stupid test that isn’t even related to our field. You can do it! -
What are my chances of getting into grad school?
soontobeslp2018 replied to jmall's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I’m not trying to burst your bubble, but most of the time to graduate school (not just the department) require your GPA to be at least a 3.0 when you apply. Since you’re not quite there it could mean they won’t even look at your application. Is there a way you could maybe take classes online somewhere or at a community college to replace the classes you need to retake? That way you could still live at home but also retake what you need? I just don’t want you to waste money applying to schools if they won’t look at your application -
Needing some advice on going into this field
soontobeslp2018 replied to jascms's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I’ve seen a good amount of medical openings in my area, but the only catch is that you need medical experience already. And CFs in medical settings are hard to come by due to the supervision aspect. My advice is to talk to professors and see if they have any connections or can maybe put you in contact with alumni who are in a medical setting now. They’ll be able to give you tips and sometimes it’s all about who you know -
Realistic SLP Tuition + Salary Questions
soontobeslp2018 replied to apslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Combined debt for undergrad and grad school I’m looking at 50-60k. In the county I live in school SLPs are paid on a different pay scale than teachers and as a CF I would be making 49,000 then a bonus for getting my C’s. It all depends on where you live though, and other factors that vary person to person -
So, I was accepted to my first choice school and I’m thrilled. But recently I’ve been having second thoughts due to finances. I have already taken out my loan for this school year and I have a grant. But I still have to pay about $800 out of pocket, then there’s textbooks and buying food/ other expenses like NSSLHA memberships and fun things. I also don’t have a car so I’ll be at the mercy of my cohort to get to clinic and food shopping. I also currently don’t have a job lined up and wasn’t given a GA so I’m struggling to find a job that’s flexible. I’m nervous about how I’m going to make it. I know it is possible but I’m struggling with not letting my anxious and stressful thoughts spiral into he worst case senarios.

Grad students: How do you take notes?
soontobeslp2018 replied to GeeLee's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My program allows us to use electronics during class for notes so I plan on using my laptop to either type in the notes section of the PowerPoint they’re using or in google docs so that way I have access anywhere to notes in case something happens to my laptop. I also plan on bringing a notebook in case I forget my laptop or it dies or something during class as I don’t have a place to charge, etc -
I have an internship at a private practice for the summer. The two owners have been my supervisors and I wanted to give them something at the end of the summer. I was going to write them thank you cards but I’m not sure what to say, I want to avoid writing the same thing in both cards. I was also wondering if I should give them a small gift too, trying to say away from gift cards but maybe flowers or something? I just want them to feel appreciated. Anyone have any ideas?

Taking the GRE multiple times
soontobeslp2018 replied to NYorker's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
If you take it you might as well let it score the test. Otherwise you just wasted $200, if you aren't satisfied with your score the first time you don't even have to send it to any schools. But I have always been told to never cancel the score -
I got an email from Western Carolina in March saying I was on the waitlist, since then I haven't heard anything from them, I even emailed them just asking about my standing on the waitlist and got no response. I'm just wondering if anyone is still waiting to hear from WCU or if there is anyone on here that goes to WCU that could give some advice. I'm disappointed that I still haven't heard anything at all, and on my application my status hasn't changed either, it still says "submitted".

SLP Decision Help: What Matters?
soontobeslp2018 replied to SLP112494's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I would look at the clinical placements for the schools you’re looking into. If they have a medical setting then you’ll get experience. Or if you’d rather go the route of applyin to schools that are known for their medical emphasis then apply to them. But most schools have at least 1 medical setting. And if they don’t you could always try to get your CF in a medical setting, although that could be challenging. Or even find a medical setting to volunteer or shadow at during free time. But also, don’t limit yourself to one setting type, you may get into a medical placement and then realize it’s not what you want. Try to keep an open mind- 9 replies

SLP Decision Help: What Matters?
soontobeslp2018 replied to SLP112494's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I also read somewhere (on ASHA but I don’t remember where exactly) that in those cases they under consideration or pre-accredited because they haven’t graduated enough classes yet. It doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the program. If you’re still hesitant I would contact the department of the school and just ask them what their accreditation status means for you as a student- 9 replies

I'm choosing not to go this fall!
soontobeslp2018 replied to nwslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
So glad you have made a decision that makes you happy. I’m sure your parents will understand, even if they may be disappointed at first. In the grand scheme of things, your happiness is more important than the debt you would have accumulated at NYU or your parent’s reactions. Continue to do great things and best of luck during your next round of applications! -
Low GPA... Is there hope for me?
soontobeslp2018 replied to pinkypink's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I agree with what everyone else has said! However, I just want to make sure you know that most of the time graduate schools require a minimum GPA of a 3.0 just to apply. So in your time off make sure to retake some classes you know you could definitely do better in, and hopefully you'll be able to meet the 3.0 to apply. I admire your determination! When you do apply, tell your story but don't let it become an excuse and also make sure you write about how you learned and grew from that experience! -
How did GPA affect your number of applications?
soontobeslp2018 replied to rec0030's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just like others have said, GPA and GRE scores are not everything. In both verbal and quantitative I had less than a 150. My overall GPA was less than a 3.5 but my CSD GPA was a 3.71. I made sure to really emphasize my experience in my personal statement, I had a few really unique experiences which I think helped me stand out. Also, make sure the people who write letters of recommendation for you know you really well so that way they can really speak to your abilities. I applied to 5 schools, was rejected from 3 and waitlisted at 2. I ended up getting accepted off the waitlist at my first choice. I also know there was someone who got rejected from my top choice who had a verbal score 20 points higher than mine and a higher GPA, so that shows that your personal statement and recommendation letters can play an important role in your application. Continue to work hard, get to know your professors and start your personal statement and GRE studying and you'll be on the right track. Good luck!- 9 replies

Housing in Grad School
soontobeslp2018 replied to Jordyn_M463's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
the loans I get will cover it. I received close to 10,000 per semester and tuition plus housing is a little over that but I plan on taking out the grad PLUS loan to cover the rest (around 2,000). I'm also using my schools health insurance which increases the cost of tuition -
Housing in Grad School
soontobeslp2018 replied to Jordyn_M463's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My campus offers off campus graduate student housing (that FAFSA pays for) which is what I'll be doing since I won't have enough money to pay rent monthly. I'll have 3 other roommates that I'll be sharing the apartment with but I'll get my own bed and bathroom so the only space we have to share is the kitchen, laundry area and living room. It's a nice balance of being alone but also having others to be with if I want to -
I graduate from undergrad in a week from today! I have been accepted to my top choice for a grad program and have my living arrangements set, just need to find a super part time job. As of today I am done with 2 of my classes! For the summer I have an internship lined up and I’m super excited for it!
-
I'm super excited that I have been accepted to a program! But I'm starting to worry that I won't be successful in classes or be a good clinician. I know I was chosen for a reason, I keep reminding myself that even though I was accepted off the waitlist that it doesn't change anything. The program I'll be attending is very competitive and very highly ranked which makes me nervous I won't be able to keep up with their standards. Anyone else feeling the same way? Any advice for getting over what I am feeling?

Note taking during class
soontobeslp2018 replied to soontobeslp2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My main concern is if it’s raining and I have to walk to or from class, I don’t want to risk the rain soaking through my backpack to my laptop. I have a case I keep it in inside my backpack but I would be distraught if it got damaged -
I was wondering what you guys are planning on doing for note taking during class. For undergrad I hand wrote all of my notes, but I don't think that would be useful during grad school. All of my classes are 3 hours long. I was considering typing them on my laptop either in a google doc, or if the professor uses a powerpoint to lecture I was going to type notes from the lecture into the note section on the powerpoint. Since I will be walking to class (around a mile each way) I am worried about how the weather (rain) might damage my laptop. Also my laptop can be somewhat unpredictable with it's battery life, and since I'm not in a place where I can afford to buy a new one I was just curious to see what others are doing
