snowbaby Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Just got an invite from Harvard!! I'm shaking. I'm an international student with US undergrad/masters degrees. DdndCraft and Just_Alice 2
imnothere Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 When you say “just,” what do you mean exactly? Like a couple hours ago? Or...
j118 Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Snowbabyjia congrats! Did you get it just now? There were some that got interview invites a couple of hours ago so im trying to determine if they are sending them out one by one or in a mass email/automated by a system.
Elephantonly Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 International student here! I also got an invite to Harvard PiN an hour ago!!

I feel that they are sending out invites one by one, given the time span of emails received. Also the invitation letter filename has my last name in it, so high chance that someone has to hand-edit that? imnothere and j118 2

Someone posted on the results board that they had 4 years of experience and 5 first author publications. Really makes you wonder... The program must have a really high bar for undergraduate GPA or something. I would love to be a fly on the wall when these decisions are being made. I saw from a Reddit thread from someone on an admissions committee said that even if someone has a ton of credentials, it's all about the fit and lab availability, so chances are, it's more so that rather than anything else. imnothere Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Here’s to praying that I get an email from them at some point ?. I know it’s still really early in the season, but I don’t think I’ve ever been as stressed as I am currently j118 and Just_Alice 2
j118 Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Thanks snowbabyjia. I hope so. Good luck to you! I think they have like 600 applicants per year and about 50 get selected for interviews, so it's great that you got to be one of the 50! snowbaby 1

(Sorry for the long comment) Yeah, for sure. That's definitely not the case for me, but I think that's an accurate portrayal of a lot of cases and summarizes the struggle at a lot of programs. (Sorry for the long comment) Not sure if this widely applicable for biomedical sciences programs, especially umbrella programs. Sure, compatibility is a factor, but it's more about compatible with the whole program/department rather than individual PI. While admission to a specific lab does happen, most students are admitted to a program/department. They typically rotate through labs and don't pick an advisor until the end of their first year. So it's hard to imagine that an outstanding applicant would get rejected just because a professor can't take students, unless they somehow make an impression that they're only interested in this program because of this one single faculty. My gpa is ~3.5, I did two years of research in undergrad, and I’ve been a lab manager for two years at an R1. I have one poster presentation, one middle-author publication, strong LORs, and a decent SOP (I believe), so I’m thinking my gpa might be holding me back. I haven’t heard back at all yet, though and it’s driving me nuts! literally exact same. I'm starting to feel really bad...
AnxiousNeuroKitty Posted December 18, 2020 Posted December 18, 2020 Got waitlisted for an interview at UW Madison. Anything I can do to increase my chances at this point? DdndCraft 1

I don't think sending more rec letter is crossing lines. and my professors said if I am not getting interview he will knock some doors for me to vouch for me. I think both are common practice
