Snowbabyjia congrats! Did you get it just now? There were some that got interview invites a couple of hours ago so im trying to determine if they are sending them out one by one or in a mass email/automated by a system.

I feel that they are sending out invites one by one, given the time span of emails received. Also the invitation letter filename has my last name in it, so high chance that someone has to hand-edit that?

Sorry to hear that :(Me too. Someone posted on the results board that they had 4 years of experience and 5 first author publications. Really makes you wonder... The program must have a really high bar for undergraduate GPA or something. I would love to be a fly on the wall when these decisions are being made.

I saw from a Reddit thread from someone on an admissions committee said that even if someone has a ton of credentials, it's all about the fit and lab availability, so chances are, it's more so that rather than anything else.

(Sorry for the long comment)

Thanks snowbabyjia. I hope so. Good luck to you! I think they have like 600 applicants per year and about 50 get selected for interviews, so it's great that you got to be one of the 50!

Yeah, for sure. That's definitely not the case for me, but I think that's an accurate portrayal of a lot of cases and summarizes the struggle at a lot of programs.

Not sure if this widely applicable for biomedical sciences programs, especially umbrella programs. Sure, compatibility is a factor, but it's more about compatible with the whole program/department rather than individual PI. While admission to a specific lab does happen, most students are admitted to a program/department. They typically rotate through labs and don't pick an advisor until the end of their first year. So it's hard to imagine that an outstanding applicant would get rejected just because a professor can't take students, unless they somehow make an impression that they're only interested in this program because of this one single faculty.

I’m starting to think that maybe applying to 8 reach schools was a bad idea ???. My gpa is ~3.5, I did two years of research in undergrad, and I’ve been a lab manager for two years at an R1. I have one poster presentation, one middle-author publication, strong LORs, and a decent SOP (I believe), so I’m thinking my gpa might be holding me back. I haven’t heard back at all yet, though and it’s driving me nuts!

literally exact same. I'm starting to feel really bad...

Got waitlisted for an interview at UW Madison. Anything I can do to increase my chances at this point?

asking you recommender to call, or saying you could provide another recommendation letter if they can accept it.

I am just thinking not sure tbh

You’ll be crossing some lines lol

crossing lines ?  I don't think sending more rec letter is crossing lines. and my professors said if I am not getting interview he will knock some doors for me to vouch for me.  I think both are common practice

If you get a publication accepted or something while you're waiting, you could send a note to "update your application." Otherwise patience.

Is WashU starting to send their invites? I saw one post in the result page.

I just got an email from WashU (DBBS - Neuro) offering me an interview so there are probably more invites to come!

Congratulations!

Is the email from your POI or graduate coordinator? So anxious now.
