I agree. Toddlerhood is exhausting, but so much fun! My little one is 2.5.

@MCH_Hopeful_2021 @Ajrw Also glad to see I am not the only lunatic attempting to pursue a doctorate with baby/ies at home lol.

Yes, I was happy to see that too! Full time job plus 2 kids.....plus doctorate? Totally reasonable, right?

Radio silence :( you?

Nope ?. Seems like they are on a later schedule. I think decisions might go out by the end of this month given their deadline was Jan 15 2021.

Yeah...and this is the 2nd year of the program, so it seems like all bets are off as to when we might hear something.

Can I join the club too!!?? ? My girl is 3.5 yrs old ☺️ We are thinking about adding another lil monkey to our family also.... ? Is it crazy to plan for pregnancies while studying doctorate?? ? I really hate that women have expiry date ?‍♀️

There’s been so many rough days and nights that I seriously wondered if pursuing doctorate was the right choice for me but I just couldn’t give up on my dream!! Research is my passion and no matter how difficult it’ll be, I want to do it with my family around me ☺️ I think it’ll be worth it! So much more!

My kid took his first steps today! I'm excited but also scared because I am totally not ready to chase him around everywhere. haha.

Anyone else with good news today?! Let's cleanse the palate, burn some metaphorical sage, and move on to positivity.

Yayyyy!! Congrats little one!!! ?
I remember when mine took her first steps and from then on I was like a madwoman running around the house and trying to make sure she doesn’t hurt herself ? Honestly I don’t know how babies don’t end up killing themselves ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️ They are crazy dangerous all the time!!!

Awesome!! Way to go little one! Not sure if this your first, but from my perspective it only gets more fun (and hilarious) from here. My two little ones are 2 and 5 so it's all dinosaurs all the time.

These made my day! ? We've been trying to have a kid and I was seriously questioning my sanity for going for my doctorate while potentially (hopefully?) having a kid during the program. Seriously feel like there may be tears of joy that there are other parents (or soon-to-be parents!) that are embarking on this exciting journey as well. So proud of all of you!!!

This is so real. I don't have kids (yet) but my husband and I are planning to start at some point during my PhD journey. Since it's looking like this PhD cycle isn't going to work out, we're talking about trying this year before next cycle (!!). I'm nervous! I'd love to hear from people who are already parents about how you're planning to balance it all.

Totally planning for #2 in 2022 lol. It will all work out...right?! ?

Definitely, don't delay having kids, if you feel ready! There's this quote that I LOVE from Henry Rollins that I think is so applicable:

"No such thing as spare time

No such thing as free time

No such thing as down time

All you got is lifetime

Go"

As someone who was notorious for "When I do X, then I can focus on Y," this quote has always resonated. So definitely don't put off life for grad school because there's no such thing. You're living.

My daughter was not planned and I had her two weeks before my final year of master's program started lol! I was so sleep deprived I don't remember much of that year hahahha! But hey, I passed it and graduated! And here I am applying for doctorate programs! BUT it would be a lie if I say I enjoyed looking after an infant and study at the same time. It was super duper tough!! Hence why I am trying to see if I can plan better if we go ahead with a 2nd one...but my body clock is ticking sooooooo we might make another accident again lol!

That being said, It's NOT impossible! Life happens (and it's not going to wait or care if we are doing doctorate)! What I know for sure is that you will make it through a day at a time, and eventually you will work out a schedule that best works for you and for your family.

Thank you so much for this quote!! I needed to hear this. ❤️

I'm also guilty for being super focused on my career... I just wish the admission committees knew how much I want it to happen!! ?

I'm in this boat too! No little ones yet but hopefully soon. I thought I was crazy but either we are all crazy or it's doable (with good support and some planning). Would love to hear more about how you guys are planning to make it all work.

Love seeing all of the positivity! Checking in again to see if anyone has heard anything from Nutrition related programs?!

Nope. I had an interview with Hopkins late December. No follow-up since then. How about you?

Maybe we should make a "Parenting and Doctorate" thread! hahahaha

It's so nice to know that we are not alone in this!

I LOVE the idea of a parent thread @dr_megaevil (although I don't know whether I'll get in yet!). Having worked some pretty demanding (80 hr week) jobs with kids I remember wondering how on Earth I would make it work. Someone said to me "you just do. You don't see it now, but priorities change and you just make it work" and that turned out to be really true. I think we don't realize how much we are capable of. Everyone is different but 3 things have worked for me 1. Having an AMAZING partner. He does way more than 50% and allows me to prioririze my career without making me feel guilty or like a bad mom. When I'm traveling for work, he's with the kids and I know they're good. 2. Compartmentalizing so when I'm with them, I'm with them and not focusing on work and vice versa (note: applies 0% during the pandemic, ha) 3. Not being a perfectionist even a little bit. They're breathing? #winning! Also....avoid the judgy (and anti vaxx) parent forums lol.

I did hear back and was accepted to Tufts! But still no word from both Hopkins and UNC since the first week of January.
