KEIM got a reaction from datu72 in Emerson SLP program
I am currently in my second semester at Emerson college and I love it! There is no “special focus” in terms of medical/school career paths. So far, I feel that they have given equal focus to both the science / school side of the field. I am in the Speech@Emerson program, not in person.

I would apply there in a heart beat if it weren't for the 4 month time commitment! I've also heard they are giving priority to their current students as well.

Who else will be apart of the May 2020 cohort? I got a call that I was accepted today. I still haven't received an email with the letter. How long did it take for the email to come through? Hope it wasn't an error. LOL.

I believe the distance cohort is 100% online while the LA cohort requires you to meet in LA 1x a month.

For some it's their dream school. I know all the programs I've applied to are pricy but distance programs are what fit my lifestyle. Everyone has their own reasons, I don't judge.

I’m a practicum supervisor. My current student is in her final semester in the Speech@NYU program.
As a supervisor, I can see that they manage to train you pretty well. NYU has contracts with sites all over the country (they are considering setting up a satellite campus in CA because so many students are on the west coast), so no worries there. She’s well-versed in many adult neurogenic treatment techniques and is independent enough to find more information. I assume part of that self-sufficiency is ingrained when you have to work through a rigorous program on your own time. The electives are great, better than the ones offered where I went to graduate school (a SUNY program). I would recommend it, at least from the perspective of a practicing clinician. The online vs. in-person argument seems situated around fit, as opposed to quality, at least in NYU’s case.
Hopefully some current or former students can chime in on the class structure and level of support.

That’s good news! I’m glad Emerson takes other factors into consideration when it comes to the 5 year expiration date for the foundational courses.

Thanks so much for all the helpful information about the timeline! I'm also a Mom as well, which is why online programs work best for my lifestyle. I do know that Baylor is 100% online with no time required on campus. Unlike, NYU and Emerson which do require some time on campus. But, I don't think it's a significant amount of time. It's another thing to consider.

I know all of them are expensive but the only determining factor for me would be cost of the program. Which one is the least expensive? I am also applying to all of those programs as well! Congrats on getting in to all 3.
I just completed my application to Baylor a few days ago. My admissions counselor informed me that I should expect a decision around 6-8 weeks. Although, she also told me people have been getting their decisions much earlier than that. I'd be interested to see what the actual turnaround time has been for other applicants.

if you can open yourself to the possibility of matriculating at other programs, I would apply more broadly. You seem to have a great profile, and if you can channel what you've written in your post into a coherent and thoughtful SOP, you are a shoo-in somewhere. As you already know, the programs you're applying to are, by the numbers, some most competitive in the country. Those programs receive hundreds of applications and accept ~10-20% of applicants, many of whom are admits from their undergradute program; however, if you aren't willing to compromise and are hellbent on an elite education, then don't.
    Let's go concern-by-concern:
I'm concerned I didn't apply to enough schools/should apply to more. See above. Maybe I should be aiming a little lower. See above. It never hurts to have safety schools. I'm in my early 30s. I mean, it's fine but I'm a little scared about being in a cohort with fresh-faced undergraduates and not measuring up. Cohorts are creeping up in age. Think of what you were like at 21. You are every bit as worthy. My GRE could be better. The first time I took it, I did worse on the multiple choice and better on the AW, so it could definitely be worse. Admittedly I'm a lot better with quantitative reasoning when I'm not a total ball of anxiety, which is why I haven't forked out another $200ish in an effort to earn back that 5.5 and push my quant up. Maybe if I fail this round again I'll revisit that. *shivers* It's solid enough that it shouldn't barr you from admission. My SOP was SO HARD to write. As you may have noticed, I'm not very good at being brief. I'm concerned I didn't say everything I should have, or what I said may not have illustrated what I wanted it to.  If there's still time, there are a handful of folk here who are willing to revise SOPs, myself included. Send me a PM if you're interested! My old GPA is still haunting me like Moaning Myrtle and looking at it in CSDCAS was like that part in "What Not to Wear" when you look in the 360 mirror, but not getting a $5,000 shopping spree afterward. ;_______; It's not a big deal; admissions committees don't harp on decisions made a decade ago. The idea of getting rejected from everywhere again after all of the work and sacrifice makes me more than a little sick to my stomach. Limbo is a mediocre game at best, but it's absolute murder when it becomes what your life looks like for too long.  Stay strong, admissions season is mentally exhausting. Make sure to take care of yourself.

I just completed this program and it was a great experience compared to other programs out there! Aural Rehab was one of my favorites! Dr. Hall is great and her lectures are very informative. I did not read the textbook much because I got a lot of info from her lectures & videos honestly but skimming through the textbook won't hurt either. I took this as an 8 week class because it was not one my difficult classes. My advice is to purchase a planner (if you don't have one already) and write out all of your assignments & due dates and that's the easiest way that I was able to stay on track while working full-time.

Yes, definitely apply!! I just completed my first semester of graduate school and I did NOT have the best stats. 3.2 overall, and a HORRID GRE score (less than 290). I believe what really helped me was my work experience. I've been a SLPA for three years and I was able to incorporate that heavily into my SOP. I think that along with my LOR from professors and supervisors increased my chances tenfold when it came to the competitive application cycle.

seconding alot on this thread. I scored floor level math.. and thats sometimes typical of people in slp programs.. "speech path math" so its called. I think studying strategies and process of elimination are the way to go. This test does not measure how well you can actually do math. it measures your analytical skills. I still basically bombed it .. however my verbal was higher and so was writing. Call the school and ask if they have a GRE cutoff.

HI! Just dropping in to give you some encouragement! I am someone who would certainly identify as "math illiterate" as well?. However, between my first GRE and my second GRE I raised my quant score by 5 points! I literally only studied Gregmat videos on YouTube and other test taking strategies. I didn't study any math "content" at all. I did the same for the verbal section and went up 6 points! I'm a firm believer that strategies of the GRE test can be learned, so don't sweat too much!

Hi! I am also pretty math illiterate, but actually ended up getting a 148 on the quantitative section (still not amazing, but amazing to me). One of my math sections was SO easy. I'm talking reading basic graphs, mean, median, mode, and basic word problems. Keep in mind, the GRE quantitative section isn't literally to test you on how well you can solve equations, etc., it's to test your ability to critically think. MANY of the problems can be solved by just understanding basic properties of math and common sense.
As far as preparation for the quantitative section goes, I have heard Magoosh is far too difficult compared to the real test and I would 100% agree. The only real mode of prep I used was practice tests. I also got plenty of sleep the night before and ate a good meal before the test so I wasn't hungry during. I took pre-calculus just this past summer which I am sure somewhat contributed to my score because a lot of the information was still "fresh" to me, but I have friends who didn't study at all and did just fine. Just read the questions carefully and about a week before the exam, take an actual practice test in a library or something as if you were taking the REAL test. That helped me understand some strategies I could use on the real test.
    GOOD LUCK!

Have you tried Khan Academy videos? They've been pretty helpful for me in the past. However, I also consider myself to be average at math, so I'm not sure if they would be helpful for you.
Some schools do have hard GRE cutoffs, but others don't require the GRE and many others would PREFER certain scores but might not care too much about your quant score if verbal and writing are good. One girl in my cohort got in with, as she called it, an "embarrassingly low" quant score, so it can definitely be done! It's just one piece of your application, and probably the least important one. Just stay away from schools with hard cutoffs!

So they require only one semester in person, and then the rest of it is online. This is helpful for me because I don't want to move away for two years but one semester would be do-able for me and my family. According to their stats and looking at Grad Cafe, it seemed to look like they accept lower GPA's and GRE scores (which would be my best bet) and that they look at the whole person, instead of just a number. I think it is going to be almost impossible for me to get into a California school. ENMU also has a non-traditional essay which I feel like could be helpful to getting in as well. And they are also rolling admissions, which give you more of a chance! So we'll see, I am applying to a few other schools as well. Hoping to get in eventually.

@keim I would have applied to Eastern New Mexico & it's online. Call the school and ask if there's a direct cut off! CBU in Cali has no direct cut off or requirement. I've attended their info sessions. They're holistic. BUT still competitive and expensive but they have a ton of resources. The faculty really want you to succeed there and they don't require you to be of a specific religion. I was very set on going there until I got accepted for spring 2020.
