Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD

Recommended Posts

Had my prelim interview yesterday and while I think it went well I can't help but overthink some of my answers and regret some of them ?  i tried to prepare for the interview, but it was nothing like i expected!

My POI and I have been in contact with each other multiple times over these last few months. Most of our interview involved her explaining to me what the next step in the process would be and how the program works at the school (qualifying exams, entering the phd program without a masters, the coursework load, special certifications, etc). I think she asked me 4 questions max and they were questions she pretty much already knew the answer to but felt as though she needed to ask them since she asked the other applicants.

This is my third year trying to get into a phd program so fingers crossed ?

Has anyone heard from HPCS at CUNY? There is no information available online as to whether they'll be releasing their invites anytime soon

I had a prelim with my POI there last week and they said the program was meeting to discuss official invites this week!

Hi, are you talking about UNL? I'm also waiting on the admissions decision. I haven't received an interview or rejection, and I'm wondering if they have already sent out all the invites, or if there is more to come. If you could please share the admission assistant's response it would be great!

Fingers crossed & lets hope for the best!

Hey there! I didn't hear back from the admission assistant but I did reach out to a current grad student at UNL. That person told me all of the initial invites have been sent out (total of 27). Sorry to pass this news along but figured it's better to know now than wait with the dreadful uncertainty.

Hi, thank you so much for letting me know! I'm a little upset, but it's better to know now then be left with the uncertainty. :)

Good luck to you, and all other applications!

I've got an interview invite from Purdue (Lafayette) Counseling PhD, their interview day is Jan 15 and I am very hopeful to go for this program, it fits very well with what I want. Naturally, I'm quite nervous, it's my first interview ever. Any tips and tricks from someone who's been through the interview process (now and/or before)?

Anyone apply to NYC schools - specifically Columbia, Fordham, Yeshiva, LIU, Rutgers (NJ), Pace? Wondering when they typically send out emails? Thanks!

I applied to same schools, but PsyD. Haven't heard anything yet. How about you?

I am by no means to kill the buzz but is anyone else preparing for Plan B if all fails? I know it's still early to quit but I spent the entire day (literally, I meant it) just really thinking about what I want to do and what I can do to better my applications, I came to a conclusion that it's personally and professionally better for myself to have more experience. Throughout this whole process, I couln't help but to feel that I rushed myself too much to finish up the applications this first cycle. Now I know I have a list of things that I will be doing over this new year, I feel much at ease now.

Enough of self actualization, good luck with interviews everyone, I am rooting for all of you!!!

I'm basically going to do what I've always tried to do, which is pursue those experiences which I believe will best prepare me for the next round. Realistically, I believe that means moving to a new lab which will fill the gaps in my CV. Of course, that's easier said than done, especially nowadays! I'll admit it's hard to motivate myself to potentially uproot for a new job, but it will probably be better in the long run. (Unless it would somehow be seen as worse for me to be moving to a second lab post-BA as opposed to sticking it out for longer in one?)

In my case, it's important for me to at least reach the US (I'm in India) post-bac. So I will be taking on a masters program if all my PhD programs lead to rejections. It's extremely expensive to earn/have saved in INR and spend in USD, so I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

I have some expectations from a couple of programs that I am already affiliated with. I hope to hear back soon, the wait is quite nerve-racking.

This is my third round applying! After the first rejection following my undergrad I decided to complete a masters (neuroscience) for more research experience! Then I got waitlisted last year and pursued more clinical experience by working admin at a psychology clinic. For me it's not a question of if I'll become a clinical psychologist, but how! So I'm definitely a fan of plan B to build up your resume :) My sincerest good luck wishes to everyone.

I totally agree with you! A rejection is not a “No”, just a “Not now”!!!

I’m currently in a 2 year research coordinator position right now and am considering pursuing a masters as a Plan B (to boost my GPA and because I really miss school). Was your masters program funded by chance or did you need to take loans out to pay? Best of luck to you, third time is the charm! :)

I really miss school too haha. Yes, my masters was funded and I recognize financial accessibility is a huge factor in gaining experience. I'm also Canadian so I'm unsure about other masters programs. Best of luck to you as well!

This is my second time applying. After being rejected after my Bachelor's, I decided to complete a Master's program instead. Now that I have my Master's, if I get rejected again, I'd likely work on licensure and continuing in research labs.

Any tips for reinterviewing with a program? I got waitlisted at my dream school last year (I was literally next on the list but it didn't shake out my way). I'm interviewing again with the same PI and grad students. I still love this program and want to go but I'm anxious about the stakes this time. I also feel like I already have so many of my basic questions answered that I'm running out of things to ask about.

I already know all of the financial, mentorship, ect questions/answers. I plan to ask about covid and racial justice but I feel like my endless vat of questions is pretty empty right now for this program. Any advice?

Maybe you could ask about what has changed since last year (subtly bringing up that you already interviewed lol ;))! Some other ideas would be about collaboration between labs, specific classes, new grants in the dept. you could potentially work on, even questions about the area/general school atmosphere! Good luck!!

Saw some people got invites from Ferkauf/Yeshiva for the clinical PsyD program.. Any idea if they are still going to send out invites? :(

I'm pretty sure those were trolls as the deadline was Jan 1st and there is no way someone can receive an invite 7 days later...
