  1. Has anyone received decisions from Chapman or Redlands?
  2. Agree with @SLPmb, the timing of what you want to do first seems important. I know there is a shortage of PhD SLPs so if you show a lot of drive and relevant research it seems like you'd have a good shot. Maybe you could contact some of the program directors at the universities you could see yourself going to for your PhD to see what they would value more and how likely they are to accept someone right out of their masters.
  3. I am worried about the cost too. Especially as one of my options is a private school. If you’re willing to relocate for a few years, my professors have said SLPs in underserved, rural areas can make $80-90 thousand a year.
  4. Saw that @hopefulSLP2be7 started a thread like this last year for those “who are playing the waiting game... Please post here if you are DECLINING your acceptance OR waitlist position at a school. This will HELP people get a better idea of their situation! Thanks to everyone who participates! Congrats to all the SLPs to be!”
  5. I don't think those advocating for the cheaper option see it as the be all end all of picking a school. Since OP really liked the program in the smaller town, cost becomes a lot more relevant. I started in a different field and acquired a lot of debt and it was less than fun to pay off. I'm certainly not seeking a life of luxury either, but independence is expensive (especially in California! ). This time around I'm going about things differently. Again, it's a personal, not one-size fits all choice. I can only speak to my experience. I think you make great points. If networking is a concern and OP sees herself eventually settling in the town of the more expensive program, I definitely see pros and financial benefit to that. In my dream scenario I get to be in a great city and limit my debt, but it's still too early to tell.
  6. Are you referring to the four ASHA science courses? If so, I think as long as its a legitimate academic institution, grad programs aren't that critical about which one. I took two of my pre-reqs at community colleges and got into a top 10 program. You are expected to list the university name and grades on you application and provide transcripts. Unless you got a really poor grade, I don't think it would ever come up in an interview. I think grad programs enforce the requirements because they have to, not because they actually care whether we can balance equations. lol. Grad programs are much more concerned with your CSD pre-reqs and are usually very aware of the grade inflation of that institution.
  7. I would agree with the 50% number. I've heard that second-hand, but also from a professor on a CSU selection-committee who openly admitted that. From their perspective, I think there is always going to be less risk with people you really know, so I don't really blame them.
  8. Experience living abroad could help you stand out. Schools out here really value cultural immersion experiences as long as your GPA is high.
  9. That’s quite a difference! Personally I would go cheaper, but I know its a really individual decision so no judgement here
  10. You’re awesome! Thank you would your friend know anything about whether medical externships are available. I’ve heard they can be hard to come by there.
  11. I did a post-bacc program to get all my pre-reqs, but I know the University of Redlands and Penn State accept applications from any applicant with a bachelor's degree. I attached a couple older topics from here and Reddit that my have some good info. I would say my post-bacc has been extremely valuable though. It's also lead me to find areas that interest me and volunteer opportunities that have allowed me to sound knowledgeable in my SOPs. Regardless you'll have to take those courses as part of your masters which will probably add on another year. Its a matter of preference/strategy how you want to do it. Good luck to you!
  12. I've thought that too about applying to <5 schools, but I've seen it works out for a lot of people on here. @griebling were you waitlisted at the other two schools by chance? Sounds like a lot of people make it off the waitlist in the late Spring or Summer.
  13. I've heard a lot of people take 2.5-3 years at CSUN because its hard to get classes. Not sure about CSUF.
  14. I've been accepted at a private CA school and an out of state school, but hoping for a CSU option. I hope Chapman works out for you!
  15. I’m sorry. I have been in that speculation game several times throughout this process and it sucks. It’s so hard to say when no news is good news or bad news. Do you know a professor there still that you were close to, maybe you could ask her where they’re at in the process? I also don’t think it would be all that harmful to inquire about the status of your application given that it’s been so long and you haven’t heard anything else while others have.
  16. Definitely agree with @cakcak. If I could have gone to a great school to get all my pre-reqs and the masters the first time around I would have. If you did do the post-bacc though, you can still earn those good LORs quickly. Just sit up front, be an active participant, and go to office hours.
  17. Haha while I strongly disagree we're all a bunch of "non-technical ladies," I do think its a handed down thing like you said. Just curious are you a CSD major? Going through my undergrad program, I can tell you it is very much a STEM major (involving anatomy, stats, medical technology/imaging, and so on) paired with counseling skills.
  18. This has been so surprising to me about CSD. My school's NSSLHA chapter also uses Facebook a lot. I thought it was a dying thing and yet it has vibrant life in CSD-world. But I also couldn't think of an alternative, nor have I heard of Discord or GroupMe so I'm pretty useless basically... I lol'd at the red text.
  19. Congrats ?? I'm glad someone on here got good news! Can I ask what time you got the email?
  20. I saw some more CSUF open house invitations went out today. I wonder if that's the last of it.
  21. Congrats! Where did you get in?
  22. Some schools don't admit from there waitlist as soon as someone declines. One of the schools I'm waitlisted at waits until after 4/15
