Hasn't been answered yet and great question. Also would love an answer to this because I have a preliminary interview this week.

It's a weeding out procedure

I second this. My current PI does this and when he did it last year when I was applying, he only invited me and 1 other person to interview weekend and offered us both spots.

How common is it to be invited to interview weekend if you DON'T get a prelim phone interview though?

Equally as likely, in my opinion. Prelim interviews are usually PI specific and some don’t do them at all where others always do.

Thanks, that's actually comforting lol

All of the programs I interviewed at a few years back (7 total) did not do phone interviews with me.

Phone interviews are a bit of a mystery, honestly. I think getting any preliminary interview is a good sign. I think it might be used to narrow down from 8 to 4 people, but not 20 to 4 (as some people have implied). Imagine how much time would go into that many phone conversations.

The main thing is to treat phone interviews seriously, like a real interview. I think it's a good opportunity to gauge, too, if you' interests and needs intersect with your POI.r

OK so follow up question. If my POI is doing a preliminary phone interview with someone else, and I haven't heard from them. Should I be reading into that?

I don't necessarily think it's a negative sign. I don't know that profs do preliminary interviews with all of the applicants they want to invite to an in-person interview. It could just be applicants they are unsure about and want additional information about before extending an in-person interview...but I'm not 100% sure

In line with the phone interview questions - do PIs always extend in-person interview invites during a call if they like you? If there is no verbal offer during the phone interview, is there still a possibility of being invited to the interview day?

I would think yes.

You have very good stats, but you’ve honestly narrowed your odds of admission tremendously by applying to just three (extremely competitive) programs in an already competitive field. Those California programs in particular usually accept 3-5 students/year out of 500+ applicants each – in other words, roughly 1% of applicants will receive an admissions offer to one of those programs. This isn’t meant to add more anxiety, but I’m just trying to give you realistic expectations.

Hey, thanks

Yeah I am a bit nervous knowing how many schools others applied for. The thing is my husband got a job in LA and those are the only 3 schools within 2 hour drive that offer neuropsych related labs / specializations. I guess at this point it's just a waiting game...?

Got an email today from SDSU that they want me to submit TOEFL scores because my university in Canada is bilingual.... even though I am American and have only ever studied in English! Talk about a stressful morning

Just got a rejection email from UGA already!! The stress begins!!

They're sending them out with a vengeance today! I got one too. Oh well, here's hoping for faculty with closer research interests and any school that means we don't have to live in Georgia! ?

Every time I see an email in my inbox I get so excited thinking it might be an application update..it's going to be a long couple of months, my dudes. Working as an RA has been enriching, worthwhile, and a great growth process, but I am SO READY to get back to school. Good luck everyone!!

Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for a phone interview? (e.g., example questions PIs might ask?)

I was told by my advisor to think about stating research interests, mentorship you're looking for, what you want to be, and what you're looking for in a and that program. Mostly everything you put in your personal statement but with your own style instead of on a piece of paper

Would you recommend like taking notes of things you want to say beforehand? I have a skype interview tomorrow and have been reading the PI's articles and writing out some more stuff about the program, looking more closely at their program handbook, etc. I want to be prepared but not come off as scripted.

For those who got invited to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville counseling interview days, was it from a specific POI or the department overall? Thank you!

That's what I'm doing with just a few important points I know I want to touch on overall. Everything else will just be natural.

Did any of you fine people apply to LSU? A friend of mine applied there last year and heard back super early, so I’m starting to get a little worried that no one is posting interviews because no one here applied...
