Hi everyone! Here's another lurker that after being placed on waitlist by her top choice university thought it was a good idea to come here to bond over our shared suffering ? It's going to be something else, this March.

I got a message from Temple University today and it turns out I have been accepted, but without funding. I wonder if there's any other person in my situation around here or if someone intends to decline an offer from them. Best of luck for your out there who are still hoping for the best! ?

YALL! I got into my dream program at UVA!!! I can’t believe I did it!!!!

i got the email while I was at my nanny job and started crying and shaking. I told my child I was happy because I was going to be a teacher and she hugged me said “I hope you will be mine next year!” Cue more tears.

I can’t believe this is real!!!

Hello everyone! I am a long time lurker and first time poster to the forum. I decided to create a profile and join in on the discussion because there seems to be an influx of waitlisted applicants this season, myself included. I applied to Northeastern's PhD program in English, but was placed on the waitlist, which has been rather difficult to accept since this program is my first and only choice. The purgatory comparison is accurate, ha ha.

It is nice to meet you all! ?

Hi everyone! As you can probably see, I'm currently waitlisted at BC and UConn, and hoping to at least be waitlisted at Notre Dame. My top choice is Notre Dame followed closely by BC (both have been my absolute dream programs for years) I primarily do 20th century Irish lit and identity studies. I do like (or hope) to think that there's a chance for a lot of us! Many people get accepted to more than one program but can only choose one, obviously, which ends up normally creating at least some movement.

I’m on the waitlist at UVA. It’s my top choice, so my fingers are crossed for movement—though this year has been so unpredictable I think I’ve decided to go into the wait period self-protectively, and assume the worst. I work mostly on the 19th century novel, queer studies, and—even more specifically—Henry James!

Hang in there! In my cycle, I got into my top choice off the waitlist. ? These things happen!

Hi!

Waitlisted at Rutgers. I do have an offer from Oxford for an one-year MA though, so I may be accepting this instead.

Thank you!! This makes me feel a whole lot better :) one of my friends was waitlisted at FIVE programs during her cycle, no acceptances, and she got off of four of those waitlists! So never give up until the very end, people.

Did you ever hear anything back from them?

I’ll extend that question to anyone who knows anything at all: what’s the deal with Emory in 2021?

Nope! I sent an email to DGS but no response yet.

I’m a bit worried....

In my application year, we were actually able to track wait-list movement in our version of this thread.  Someone who was admitted to Indiana got in off a waitlist at her top choice.  Her spot at IU then went to someone who had been admitted to U of Rochester, and that person's U of R spot went to me.  We saw all of that movement happen from like April 11th-13th.  The wait is agonizing, but don't give up.  The departments are hamstrung until they hear from the people who received initial offers, and those people might be waiting on their own waitlists.  A LOT of movement happens in early April, usually.

Wishing everyone the best of luck! It does seem like a lot of people end up in the situation @Tybalt is talking about, where movement doesn't really happen until the 11th hour. Does anyone have any insight on how many people usually get put on waitlists? I assume it depends on cohort size and other factors. Also, it seems there is quite a bit of variation in terms of how people get notified of being on a waitlist: people receiving calls, emails, or finding out on their own by contacting the school Wondering if any of this matters. Just thinking out loud.

Different departments at different schools have their own procedures. How you're contacted doesn't matter. People might even be contacted in ways that are different than in the past because of COVID. Some schools rank their waitlists regardless of field. Some do it specifically by proposed sub-field. I think it is sometimes helpful to remember that being on a waitlist already means the school is interested in your work.

Some schools might have a very small waitlist because they accept 1.5-3x as many people as they have spots for. Some schools might waitlist as many people as they have spots for. Some schools waitlist 2-3x as many people as they accept. Some schools might also have a "hidden" waitlist. Some schools might not ever get to their waitlist. The number of available spots might also depend on if they had an unexpected amount of people accept or reject their offer in the previous year(s).

@NervousYolkI am one of the waitlisted applicants to the University of Toronto. They emailed me yesterday afternoon. But hey, it's not over 'til it's over! Good luck to you!
(Oh, and my research interests include book history and interdisciplinary humanities--UofT is probably my top pending choice because of their interdisciplinary print culture specialization)

Michigan decisions are being made today. Good luck to everyone!

Just curious, do you mean they’ll be posted today or like they’re meeting to make the final decisions?

The meeting is today! I expect decisions should come sometime next week.

@NervousYolk Hi! Yes, that's me. I skew toward 19th and 20th centuries, with a special focus on artists' books, so it's been sort of hard to find good potential advisors as the lion's share of book specialists tend to focus on medieval/early modern or are in library science/information studies programs.
I am applying from the US, so that makes me an international applicant in the context of U of T. Word on the street is that it's harder to get in and funded if you're an American, so we'll see.

I am legit losing my mind waiting to hear back. I have to read two novels, read three critical articles, grade about 100 assignments, and write multiple response posts by Monday and yet all I can do is refresh my email while looking at tiktoks.

Just wanted to share that I've gotten very lucky (and had a great letter of rec from a poi who went to Stanford), so I'll be declining a few of my offers this weekend.  Hopefully there will be a spot opening up for people on the waitlist at a couple schools!
