Fall 2020 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD

Quick question: do schools/programs send out rejection notice all at once to applicants that weren’t invited to the interview? For example, i know the interview for Fordham was approximately two weeks ago, and i have seen someone else posted on the Results page that they received their rejection letters. But I have not yet received even one rejection even though two of the programs i applied to are finished interviewing applicants.

What does this mean?

Unfortunately, if you didn't interview, you will most likely be receiving a rejection at some point. Most schools seem to send out acceptances and rejections at the same time, so it could be the case that some POIs have already identified the applicant(s) they want while others are still deciding. There is always the unlikely chance that they review applications again after the interviews for whatever reason?

Specifically for Fordham - did you check the box to have your application reviewed for their Masters program if you weren't selected for the PhD program? I also didn't get my rejection from Fordham yet but I'm guessing it's because they have to consider me for the masters program.

If you are quite certain of your choice and attending the remaining interviews would be a personal or financial strain, then maybe you want to consider a cancellation, but I think in the vast majority of cases, if you can, you should attend your other interviews.  I have been given the advice to not rank programs before visiting them as there are both good and bad surprises!

I agree with everything Modulus said. I just wanted to add one thing. If you are really certain of your decision, declining the interview may also open up that slot to someone who may have been waitlisted for an interview. So if you would be going just for the sake of going and not really considering it, I would opt for reaching out. I don't think it would burn any bridges. I would phrase it something like this: "thank you so much for the interview opportunity. However, I have recently been offered acceptance to a different program and will be committing to that offer."

Just cancel. Open a stop for someone else. I got accepted to my top choice and had to cancel 5 interviews. Everyone except one took it well.

First off CONGRATULATIONS? that is an amazing blessing!

If it is an official acceptance that you are certain you want to accept (duh 1st choice lol), I would recommend (if its not too much economical strain) going to one additional interview just to potentially have room for negotiations (request higher stipend, or secure RA Line, etc). In the interest of your time and the schools (and all other anxiously hopeful applicants) I would let the other programs know you have made a decision so that they can extend the opportunity to someone else.

Again congrats you earned this! ??

Agree with this. As someone who is currently waitlisted for an interview, knowing that people might take the slot who have no intention of accepting an offer would be disheartening. I think those waiting would be grateful for people who cancel when they know for sure they have a top-choice offer in hand and want to go to that program.

thank you guys for the advice, I will be cancelling! hopefully this helps someone out :)

Clinical psych is a really small field. To be extended the invites is a huge honor. To just not even go and meet the faculty member who invited you, their grad students, and learn more about the program is kinda rude. You could be excited about your first choice but can be surprised by other programs and what they have to offer. But so it goes I guess

if you didnt get an interview 99% you didnt get in. Sorry for being blunt. At most, you might get a masters offer from them. I got that last year

Ah I see. That explains it. I was just surprised that someone else who applied to the same program at the same school received a rejection already while I haven’t.

regarding the masters program, no I didn’t check that as I have a masters already.

I can see what you're saying, but I have to disagree. It is equally as rude to go to an interview knowing full well you're most likely going to accept an offer elsewhere. Not to mention, it's a lot of money out the window. Schools have applicants on hold for this very reason, and by her giving away her spot for the interview, she's most likely allowing a more eager applicant to take her place. I would say it's more considerate than anything.

Hi everyone!

Question: I got an unofficial (email from POI) offer today from my first choice and accepted! I will be waiting for the official email first, but once I have that is it considered good form to reach out to programs I have interviewed at but not heard back from yet to please "remove me from consideration" since I have accepted an offer at another program?

Appreciate any advice on how to navigate this. Thanks, and good luck to everyone as those offers start rolling in!

Yes! The second I accepted my #1 choice. I thought it was fine to wait a day and got acceptances offers from other programs, the second ranked applicant got a waitlist (which sucks). I felt bad and I responded quickly to give them enough time to immediately go to their second choice and give the good news.

Yes. It allows them to move on to the next applicant & you will be doing a very kind service to those of us that are in waiting mode.

Should you tell POI's you've been accepted elsewhere..even if you don't know if you're going to accept? I interviewed on Monday at my top choice. Since then, I received an offer of admission elsewhere. Next week should I send an email along the lines of wanting to check the status of my application as I have received an offer and want to be able to make a timely educated decision?

If you have completed all interviews elsewhere and would accept the offer at the school you are inquiring about, I have been told that you can reach out, just to express continued interest and let them know your situation.

Hi Clinical Psych Ph.D.  community,

There were two posters on the results page who have Zoom interviews at Washington State University and one who received a rejection.  If any of you see this, I would be very grateful if you were to feel comfortable DM'ing me your POI initials.

Sending everyone positivity during this stressful time!

Thank you! ?

Hi guys!

I found out I am waitlisted at my top choice program and I was wondering if anyone can shed light on how the waitlist works? Will I be considered only if the person accepted by my poi declines the offer or does it not matter? Is their a ranking given to the waitlisted and they are considered accordingly irrespective or POI?

thanks in advance

Hi everyone! Two questions. ?

-Has anyone received a rejection from U of Kentucky yet?

-If you were accepted to IUPUI in AH's lab, do you think you'll take the spot? I'm on the waitlist.

Thank you!

No official rejection, I just assumed since the interviews were sent in a mass email.

Anyone who went to Alabama Tuscaloosa's interview weekend, can you please DM me? I wasn't able to go in person so I had a skype interview but I'd really like to hear more about peoples' experiences interviewing in person. Bonus points for geropsych track. Thanks!!

For UK Clinical or Counseling? Although Clinical has sent out their first round offers, I think they're still finalizing their incoming class and then they'll send out rejections. I don't think Counseling has sent out official offers yet, but it seems as though some POI's have reached out to their first round offers.

Me too please WSU posters if you this and you don’t mind DM POI initials.

Also are the interviews one-one with the POI or was this a mass email?

From my understanding you'll receive an offer if the top choice applicant and those who are ahead of you on the waitlist for your specific POI (if any) turn down the offer. Programs/PIs *should* tell you whether you are either high on the waitlist, in the middle, or low on the waitlist but I don't think they're obligated to disclose your exact place on the waitlist. Good luck!!
